notes week 8 dreamweaver

dreamweaver: this was the most frustrating one yet.!!!!!!! the tables really made it hard to put pictures where you want. my picture sizes were constantly out which met the table sizes were always wrong. Making the three links really gave me a headache because they worked when i was in dreamweaver but when i put them on the file server it wouldnt work and i couldnt figure out why.. this problem drove me insane. i found out however that the problem was in the link box, i had to delete the uneeded crazy crap. its amazing to find that not knowing one tiny detail such as deleting a pathway can lead to hours of headache... after this experience i bought a book on flash and am currently reading it from cover to cover.

NOTES:
Meta- data helps the search engines find what there looking for. metadata has been understood as “Data about Data

an example of two way communication is msn, yahoo chat, and bullitin boards.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT B4 YOU START WHEN MAKING A WEBPAGE .

good ideas to include in your webpage: forums, fan bases, email adress contact.
research - gather content - find your target niche - (who will look at) what is your messsage your trying to get accross? create a map - link it to other pages? incorporate games (it brings people back) make a guess book.

if you have a boring hyperlink topic use a rollover graphic where when you roll over it with your mouse the page or link does something cool...

consider the speed of your page if your using flash or there is a lot of content

if your trying to sell an idea use lots of graphics.

good webpage to look at (donniedarko.com) this website is selling the movie it makes you inquisitive and makes you want to go see the movie which is bascially the aim of the webpage.

mouse followrers are a quick way to add graphics...

unmoderated websites
anyone can write whatever they want

moderatd websites
get scaned to make sure nothings explicit

to stop spam getting in your website email addess

Email - spam filter, make new users fill out a registration form, turn it into a graphic before you post it. instead of writing your email address like this brooke@yahoo.com you could write brookeatyahoo.com

dynamic drive.com week8

look at this website..

www.dynamicdrive.com and then you are going to click and look at everything...and then (again) you are going to write about how you could change, alter, modify and make the things you find there your own...pick six and write about them.....about what they could be used for on your pages....

Dynamicdrive.com

This website was very good to get ideas for the website that i am making, it has so many cool ideas and little extras that you can add to your website to give it an edge... things like scrolling toolbars, text animation, calenders scrollers and little mouse followers... most of the extras are pretty dodgy and would probabally make your webpage look cheaps or tacky like one of those web sites that contain heaps of pop ups (and doesnt everyone hate them!!!) which could distract or iritate the user but some are awsome the following ones are my top 6

Image on Mouseover Effects ----> Here..Spotlight effect.. This one is different i have never seen it on a webpage before. its basically a dark page but your mouse cursor acts like a torch..whenever you move it arounf the page it lights up what you are trying to look at.. this function could be good if your webpage was like a maze, or you wanted it to be a bit challenging for the user. it would be a good effect as a game feature as well...... to make this feature my own i could change of modify the colour of the screen for example if i didnt want it to be black i could change it to pink. or some sort of other bright colour. To get the feature on your webpage as far as i know all you need to do is copy the style sheet coding and paste it into your own coding next to where it says head and then copy the rest of the coding to where it says Body on your own page... it seems pretty straight forward and its cool that its so easy to copy and paste...

Image on mouse over effects--->here...highlight image script.
this graphic is basically dull pictures but when you run your mouse cursor over them they trun really bright .. this would be good to use if you had lots of icons to click on but didnt want your page to look cramped.. i would make this my own by copying the coding and modifying the graphics to words or links that needed to be clicked on....

The dynamic calender... This one would useful if you had a website where you needed to plan something. For example a travel agent website or Virginblue... this calender is easy to use and has features to let you jump forward and back a month... i could modify this into my own website by changing the colours and adding special days of the year.... for example if i was a travel agent i could show peak seasons for certain coutries at different time of the year using differnt colours or by having mulitple calenders for each country...

Text animator:: This one is basically like credits that play at the end of a movie.. it starts boldly at the bottom and fades to the top. it works quite effectivly and could almost be mistaken for the star wars introduction.. To modify and make your own you could add your name or information you wanted displayed like a mission statement or something and have it playing at the intorduction to your website instead of having a countdown or something.. again the colours could be changed to make it look different...

3d spinning message: this one grabs your attenetion because it takes over the whole screen and then text spins around over the content of the webpage like a different layer...its transperent which is good and doesnt last to long which is good becuase it would get annoying pretty quick.. i think its a good attention grabber but wouldnt be to useful otherwise..

the Matrix text effect this one was my favourite so i left it to last... the MATRIX effect.. everyone is familiar with the falling green letters that make up the matrix... this could be incorporated and modified again with different colours.. but you could also make it so th letters can be hitting something and making sentences that relate to what the webpage is about...

essay notes

your next blog is about your essay....you will be writing about possible topics and doing some initial research to get yourself started...

My academic essay...

topics i may use for my essay include

shopping

music

jobs

games

programming

research

I think these topics will be a bit cliche, i found a newspaper article in the age that talks about downloading your brian in to the computer by 2050.. i think that this is a really interesting and possible prediction so i may investigate this further..

In addition you will have to use a picture, with a caption explaining how the picture relates to your essay.

want you to write about the future. Where you think some aspect of the web is going. Now think about this topic. There are thousands or millions of various ways we use the web. So you are going to pick one of those or a group of those ways and then you are going to write about where you see them going in the future. You will argue the pros and cons of such a future. You will talk about the societal/economic/artistic implications of such a future. You will prove that such a future will even happen. By future, I mean anywhere from five to ten to fifty years ahead.

GIF FILES

internet flasher Posted by Hello
well today we had to come up with something that had happened in the news lately and turn it into an animated gif. i decided to do something trivial so i went to google and looked up various news pages. i found out that britney spears has announced she is pregnant.. Excellent.... :) bimbo britney is having a baby to a homie wannabe so i thought what could be better then a close up of britneys face, a picture of homer simpson and a photo shoped image of britney with a pregnany belly.... so i went to work... i found photos of britney's profile close up and saved them into photoshop. i then found a photo of an xray of homer simpsons brain which i thought was funny and very appropriate so i saved that to photoshop as well. then using photoshop i put britneys head onto a pregnant body and saved all three pictures as a gif file to the desktop.i opened up image ready to create my cartoon and made a sequence using all 3 pictures i then saved that to the desktop as well as a gif file..once completed i right clicked on the desktop icon and opened my file using the internet explorer. and my cartoon came to life..i then saved it to the ftp server.
i think if you watch it for long enough britney does become homer which i think is pretty cool.. i really liked this exercise. its a good way to learn how people can make cartoons and statments using pictures

Brooklyn

Bird Bath.

I wanted to do more experiementing with animated gifs because i found it fun using gif construction. I found a picture of a bird bath on google and copied it to my pictures. I then opened the file in photoshop and duplicated it. i then proceded to crop pictures of birds and place them in various places around the page saving each edited image as a gif onto the desktop as i went along. i then opened gif construction and chose the create animation wizard icon. i then arragnged my edited pictures in the desired sequence and saved it as birdbath gif to the desktop..I think the end result turned out better then the britney homer gif as well as the camila gif.

Brooklyn

i think there is a lot more to be explored in gif and i am finding it interesting making images fade and re appear and move like cartoons..

sounds:) fruityloops

this assignment was cool!! i thought it was really good learning how to manipulate sounds and all the layering....i made lots of awsome sounds. here are some descriptions and why i made them sound the way that i did.

Car crash: this one was easy cause most of the sounds were already saved. it was a good one to start with as it helped me navigate and try different things. not much needed manipulating... basically its my interpretation of cars tyres locking up and then crashing into something.... it starts quiet has a big build up and then finally Bam the crash....

Chair: when i was little we always used to play musical chairs and there was always this dumb cheesy music playing... after scanning over different sounds i eventually found some good musical chair music and i only used 4 layers to make it sound funny. this one was simple and cute just like a kids game of musical chairs.. i used a racey beat cause its always a competiton to see who wins at this game. i think that it sounds fun.

Being drunk: i used 4 layers for this one as well. they included a tick tick tick sound .. when im drunk and have to get to sleep there is always a bloody clock ticking somewhere!! and i felt that this was very very appropriate.. the disco music was another layer i used because your head is always thumping and your ears ringing from the nightclub music. the scary all over the place music is used because your not sure where you are, your disorientated and its a sea sickly sound... i think that when all these sounds are played together it sounds pretty sikly :)

wake up with no hands:
this was a hard one cause i had no idea what it was supposed to sound like i hope this tune sounded like it was pretty scary like what the hell is going on here>? sounds like old school atari space invaders but i like it so its staying!!

the other 2 sounds were just random fun sounds that sound pretty funky together!! both used different spacing and layers and the outcome was really cool

exercise 2
strange sounds encountered in files, and flash movies and cartoons and weird creations.

In webpages content, the designers sometimes incorporate sounds for various reasons. for fun, to grab the users attention, to entertain, to sample music for example on the kids page www.powderpuffgirls.com you will find that when ever you run your cursour over a link or button a bubble sound will occur.. music and sounds are incorporated frequently into childrens websites to hold there attention and keep them on the page.. it also makes it more interactive and fun... in fact on every childrens website i found there was music.....

i found the following information to help me understand some different terminology:

AUTOSTART=true means automatically play sound when document is loaded. This way, the sound will play as a background sound. You can also set the value to false. The sound will play when the "play" button is clicked.

LOOP= This tells browser how many times to play sound. n could be an integer, true, or false. Setting LOOP=true, browser will continue playing your sound until the stop button on the console is clicked.

WIDTH and HEIGHT This is how the sound control (console) will be displayed. Setting them as the given numbers, browsers will display a full console. Setting the width=0 and height=2, the console will not displayed by the browsers. Other values that too small will cause the browsers display uncompleted image

http://www.tips-tricks.com/sound.asp

some other intersting facts i found...

How do you link sound files to text?

A sound file is linked to text the same way another web page is linked to text. For example, if you wanted to link the sound file "any_sound.wav" to the text "Any Sound", you would type:
Any Sound

http://www.eiu.edu/~mediasrv/html-tutorial/sound.html

There are a number of different type of sound files that can be put on web pages. Three of the more common sound files are .wav, .mid or .midi, and au. files. One advantage to using a midi file is that midi files are much smaller and therefore it takes less time to download them. Midi files can only contain background (instrumental) music. Both au. files and .wav can contain any type of sounds (eg., vocal, background). However, .au and .wav files are much larger than midi files so it typically takes longer to download these files.

researching different websites.

Personal HOmepage: www.garry-brookes.com Garry Brookes shows his family photos and hobbies, his cv and his family genealogy... it has a simple layout but substantial content for someone that doesnt have any experience in website development its pretty darn good.. i think that he uses this website to update his larger family of what his kids and wife are up to in there lives kind of like a modern christmas card... i think that he has kept his page simple for that reason...

Hip fashion Company: aka http://www.sportsgirl.com.au

Bank www.summerland.com.au
Summerland credit union web wite was a lot slower and dull. i wasnt really interested and thought drawbacks to this were that there is nothing stimulating on the page and it was kinda boring and you have to click on a lot of content before you actually find what you want. they use dull blues gray lm not sure what there trying to achieve by not making it interactive.. banking is bad enough as it is, the designers should have come up with an easier layout and chosen different colours..i suppose they clearly labelled internet banking which is easy to find and what the majority of people would be after in a bank website

A restaurant: www.centralounge.com very chic awsome use of lighting and photography. they use a countdown at the begining to get the viewer excited about visiting and seeing what the restraunt will look like..

Grocery product website: www.GoldenCircle.com.au Pineapple mascot
bright, sunny, lots of photos of pinapple bushes and the factory, different products

A kids site: WWW.barbie.com barbie!!! this is what you would expect from any childs website games music and lots of PINK!!!! this website had lots of colourful animations, lots of hidden icons to click on, very interactive

something strange:

evaluate how people create content for the web and understand the differnt target audiences: people create content for the web by first hopefully deciding what the target audience wants and then base the website around that..

web designers before making a websitethe designer should definatly find out the target audience and resarch competitors websites, this gives them an idea of what they can do to get their own website to stand out form the majority...
in my research i found that kids websites have more cartoons and use candy colouring
the 20-35 generation uses modern chic and classy photographs to show clubs and clothing banks i found used limited graphics probabally because it would be to distracting for the user however there was more substantial information...

open source and hacking

I found a definition for open source movement on the website www.infotoday.com and included it below

what is open source?

All software is written with source code. With open source software, the code is protected by a special license that ensures everyone has access to that code. That means no one company can fully own it. Freedom means choice. Choice means power.

Open source is inevitable. It returns control to the customer. The code is open and you can see it, change it, learn from it. Bugs are more quickly found and fixed. And when customers don't like how one vendor is serving them, they can choose another without overhauling their infrastructure. That means: No more arbitrary pricing. No more technology lock-in. No more monopolies...http://www.redhat.com/about/mission/opensource.html

more choice more power to the customer

open source creates better software. It multiplies one company's development capacity many times over. Everyone collaborates, the best software wins. Not just within one company, but among an Internet-connected, worldwide community. It's no coincidence that the rise of open source closely followed the rise of the Internet. The perfect breeding ground for collaboration, the Internet moves ideas and code around the world in an instant.
As a result, the open source model often builds higher quality, more secure, more easily integrated software. And it does it at a vastly accelerated pace and often at a lower cost

The open source movement.

When I researched open source movement I found out a lot that I didn’t know about software and software companies.I have thought about different reasons as to why open source is good and why its bad I have put them in dot points.

Reason why its good…….

* More widely spread software and information
* More opportunity from younger programmers to get recognition

Reason why its bad…………

* There is no quality control
* Companies lose money
* Consumer manuals will become obsolete
* Programs can become to difficult and to complex to work
*People can add whatever they want
* Spam and popup would become a problem if software was from the internet

I found out that windows is a locked program because if it wasnt locked people could alter programs and make different applications and make competition for bill gates, then the prices will come down....

some class notes:

Hacking doesnt cost that much. hackers show companies their protective software doesnt work very well.

hackers are sometimes called robin hoods...

----It's been estimated that three-fourths of today's successful system hacks are perpetrated not via network security flaws, but by entering directly through the "front door" - exploiting vulnerabilities in customer facing web applications
--------Great hackers also generally insist on using open source software. Not just because it's better, but because it gives them more control. Good hackers insist on control. This is part of what makes them good hackers: when something's broken, they need to fix it. You want them to feel this way about the software they're writing for you. You shouldn't be surprised when they feel the same way about the operating system.http://www.paulgraham.com/gh.html

ultimatly the next generation will develop better software in the future. www.wikopedia.org
windows is an example of locked software.
